Add a Watermark to Every PDF Page
Add a watermark to PDF files when you need a clear ownership, review, or status mark on every page. This free online tool places one centered text overlay on each page of your PDF without rasterizing the document or replacing the original content. Enter a short label such as CONFIDENTIAL, DRAFT, or SAMPLE, choose a rotation, choose an opacity, and download the finished file.
Add a watermark to your PDF now
How to add a watermark to every PDF page
Start by uploading one PDF. The tool accepts a single PDF at a time so the options are unambiguous and the resulting download has one predictable output file. After the upload is read, the options panel appears. Type the text you want to display, select an angle, select an opacity, and choose the action button. The server adds one text overlay to every page and the normal processing step then makes the result available for download.
1. Upload a PDF
Choose the document that needs a watermark. The page count and dimensions are preserved. The input must be a readable, non-password-protected PDF; encrypted files that cannot be opened are rejected rather than partially processed.
2. Enter concise watermark text
Use up to 80 characters after trimming surrounding whitespace. Short text is easiest to read over documents with different page sizes. Common examples include CONFIDENTIAL, INTERNAL, DRAFT, NOT FOR DISTRIBUTION, and a company or project name.
3. Choose rotation and opacity
The four angle choices are -45°, 0°, 45°, and 90°. A diagonal angle is useful for a traditional document watermark, while 0° or 90° can suit forms and reports. Opacity ranges from 0.1 to 1.0. The default 0.3 setting makes the mark visible while allowing text, tables, and images below it to remain readable.
4. Process and download
Click the action button and wait for processing to finish. Download the new PDF from the completion step. Every page receives exactly one centered overlay, including the last page; there is no page-selection mode in this tool.
Watermark rotation and opacity settings
Rotation changes the direction of the watermark text, not the page itself. The underlying PDF page orientation remains unchanged. The placement calculation accounts for the text's rotated bounding box and the page's own PDF rotation, keeping the complete mark inside the visible page area. This prevents the ends of a diagonal watermark from being clipped on portrait or landscape pages.
Opacity controls how strongly the gray Helvetica text is painted over the document. Lower values are more subtle; higher values are more prominent. For ordinary business documents, 0.3 is a practical starting point. Use a stronger value when the background is busy, and a lower value when the watermark crosses dense text or diagrams.
Keeping the original PDF readable
This tool draws text on top of the existing page rather than converting the page to an image. The original text, vectors, links, and page dimensions remain in the PDF. A bounded font size keeps the overlay proportional to the page, while the fixed gray color and moderate default opacity avoid an opaque colored block. For best results, choose a short phrase and avoid placing sensitive information in a watermark that could obscure an important field. If the page margins are too tight for a clean overlay, use our PDF cropping tool to adjust them first.
Privacy and temporary file handling
Processing is self-hosted by PDF-File.com. The uploaded document is used to create the output on the server and the tracked temporary files are scheduled for deletion according to the application's cleanup process. Do not upload a document unless you are permitted to process it. The tool does not send the PDF to an external conversion API or require an account.
What this watermark tool does not do
Version one intentionally focuses on a dependable text overlay. It does not tile a repeated pattern across the page, add an image or logo, offer custom colors or fonts, exclude individual pages, or provide arbitrary placement controls. If you need a fixed visual mark on selected pages, use the separate Add Stamp tool. If you need a logo or signature image, use the image overlay or e-signing tools instead.
Because the watermark is a visible page overlay, it is not a security guarantee against removal. It communicates status or ownership and can discourage casual reuse, but it should be combined with appropriate document permissions and organizational controls for confidential material, such as our PDF password protection tool.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will the watermark appear on every page?
Yes. This tool applies one centered text watermark to every page in the uploaded PDF, including pages at the end of the document.
Can I change the watermark angle?
Yes. Choose -45°, 0°, 45°, or 90° before processing.
Can I make the watermark transparent?
You can choose opacity from 0.1 through 1.0. The default 0.3 is designed to keep the original page readable.
Does watermarking change my page size?
No. The output preserves the input page count and dimensions while adding the text overlay.
Can I use an image as the watermark?
Not in this focused tool. It supports one gray Helvetica text watermark; use an image-specific tool for logos and pictures.
