How to Convert BMP to PDF Online for Free

Convert bitmap images to PDF: settings, accepted files and a tested example

A BMP file is a bitmap image that is usually stored without compression, so a single picture can take up several megabytes. Converting BMP to PDF gives you one document that holds many images, opens on any phone or computer and is easy to email or print.

How to convert BMP to PDF online

The whole conversion happens on one screen. Upload your bitmaps, check the order and the page settings, then convert.

  1. Click Choose Files and pick one or more BMP images, or drag them onto the page.
  2. Drag the thumbnails into the order you want the pages in.
  3. Use Rotate Right on any image that is sideways.
  4. Pick the page size (A4, Letter or Fit to Content), the orientation and the margin.
  5. Leave Merge all images in one PDF file ticked for a single PDF, or untick it for one PDF per image.
  6. Click Convert To PDF, then Download.

Page size, orientation and margin settings

  • A4 or Letter: the image is scaled to fit inside the margins and centred on the page.
  • Fit to Content: each page takes the size of its image, one pixel per point, plus the margin.
  • Automatic orientation: a wide image gets a landscape page and a tall one a portrait page. You can also force Portrait or Landscape.
  • Margins: No Margin, Small Margin (20 points) or Big Margin (40 points) around the image.

Merging several bitmaps into one PDF

With the merge box ticked, every image becomes one page of a single PDF in the order shown. Rotations you set with Rotate Right are applied to the merged PDF, and to each PDF when you untick the box.

Why convert a bitmap image to PDF?

The BMP file format most often stores its pixels with no compression at all. That keeps the picture exact but makes the files large and awkward to send.

A PDF can hold many pages, so a stack of scans or screenshots travels as one file. Every PDF reader shows the pages at the size you chose, and printers handle them without an image viewer.

Does BMP to PDF lose image quality?

No pixels are thrown away. The converter turns each bitmap into a PNG image, which uses lossless compression, and embeds it in the PDF as it is.

Which BMP files the converter accepts

  • Uncompressed BMPs with 1, 4, 8, 16, 24 or 32 bits per pixel, stored top-down or bottom-up.
  • Files up to 25 MB each; the page refuses a larger file before uploading it.
  • BMPs saved with RLE compression are refused. Open them in an image editor and save them again as standard BMP.
  • Transparency is not kept: a 32-bit BMP comes out without its alpha channel.

The PDF holds the image only, so its text cannot be selected or searched. Run the finished file through OCR PDF to add a searchable text layer.

What happened when we tested BMP to PDF

We converted our test file test.bmp (351.6 KB), a 400 by 300 pixel image in one flat colour, with the default settings: page size A4, orientation Automatic, No Margin, and Merge all images in one PDF file ticked. The result was a 1-page PDF of 3.3 KB, ready 0.2 seconds after we clicked Convert To PDF on our local test server.

A single flat colour compresses extremely well, so a photo or a scan will not shrink this much. Tested in October 2026.

BMP together with JPG, PNG and TIFF images

This tool accepts BMP files only. To build one PDF from a mix of BMP, JPG, PNG and other images, use Merge Images to PDF.

For the opposite direction, PDF to BMP renders each PDF page as a BMP image. To make a merged PDF smaller for email, run it through Compress PDF.

Is BMP to PDF free?

Yes. You do not need an account, and the PDF gets no watermark.

How large can a BMP file be?

Each BMP can be up to 25 MB. The page checks the size before it uploads anything.

Can I get one PDF per image instead of one combined file?

Yes. Untick Merge all images in one PDF file before converting; with several images the PDFs arrive together in one ZIP file.

Why was my BMP file rejected?

The converter reads uncompressed BMP files only. A BMP saved with RLE compression is refused, so save it again as a standard BMP and retry.

What happens to my BMP files after conversion?

Each BMP is uploaded over HTTPS, converted, and deleted from our server together with its PDF page as soon as the page is sent back to your browser.

Can I edit the text in the converted PDF?

Not directly, because every page is a picture. Edit the original image and convert it again, or run the PDF through OCR PDF to make its text searchable.
