Plain text versus PDF: what changes

Plain text is unformatted: letters, digits, spaces, tabs and line breaks in a character encoding. Every reader shows it in their own font and window size.

A PDF fixes the page size, the font and where each line ends. That is why people convert TXT to PDF before sending notes, logs, transcripts or simple letters to someone else.

  • Bold, italics and headings: a TXT file has none, so the PDF has none either. For styled text, write it in a word processor and use Word to PDF.
  • Line breaks: each line of the file starts a new line in the PDF, and a line wider than the page wraps at the margin.
  • Page breaks: long files simply continue onto the next page.
  • Letters beyond English: accented and Cyrillic letters in a UTF-8 file come out as written.

How the TXT to PDF converter works

Each file is converted on our server with LibreOffice, using the same command line conversion that the LibreOffice help documents (convert-to pdf with the writer_pdf_Export filter). The text is set in Liberation Mono, a monospaced font, on A4 pages, so columns lined up with spaces stay lined up. There are no margin or font settings on this page.

  • Files up to 25 MB each; the page refuses a larger file before uploading it.

What happened when we tested TXT to PDF

We converted our small test file test.txt (42 B), two short lines of text, with no options to choose; the tool processed the file as uploaded. It returned a 1-page PDF of 14.0 KB, ready 0.8 seconds after we clicked Convert To PDF on our local test server.

The PDF is larger than the text file because it embeds the letters of the font it uses. Tested in October 2026.

Converting several TXT files to PDF

Upload several text files together and each one becomes its own PDF; the download then arrives as one ZIP file. To get a single document, join the PDFs afterwards with Merge PDF.
