How to make and print a booklet from a PDF
A booklet is a stack of sheets folded in the middle and stapled along the fold. For the pages to come out in order, each sheet has to carry pages from both ends of the document, which is hard to arrange by hand.
This PDF booklet maker sorts that out for you and hands you a file that’s ready to print. It’s free, and you don’t need an account.

Why the pages look out of order
The first sheet of a booklet carries the last page and page 1 on its front, and page 2 and the second to last page on its back. That arrangement is called imposition, and it’s what makes the folded stack read 1, 2, 3.
A booklet needs a multiple of four pages, since every sheet holds four. If your PDF has some other count, blank pages get added at the end, so a 10-page file becomes a 12-page booklet with two empty pages at the back.
How to print and fold the booklet
Each page of the booklet file is one side of a sheet: page 1 is the front of the first sheet and page 2 its back. Print the whole file double-sided and choose flip on the short edge, or the back of each sheet comes out upside down.
If your printer can’t print on both sides, print the odd pages, put the stack back in the tray and print the even pages. Try it with the first sheet before you print the rest.
Keep the sheets in order, fold the stack in half and staple twice along the fold. This binding is called saddle stitching, one of the oldest kinds of bookbinding.
Which paper size to choose
Two pages share each side of a landscape sheet, and each is scaled down to fit its half while keeping its proportions. A Letter page on Letter paper prints at about 5.25 by 6.8 inches (62 percent), and an A4 page on A4 paper at about 139 by 197 mm, a little smaller than A5.
Each page sits centered in its half, with a quarter inch free at the top and bottom, an eighth of an inch at the outer edge and an eighth on each side of the fold. Links and form fields don’t carry into the booklet, so flatten a filled-in form with Flatten PDF first; to put more than two pages on a side without folding, use Pages per Sheet.
How to make the booklet pages print larger
Crop your pages’ own margins before you make the booklet, and the content prints about a fifth bigger. The tool scales each page to fit its half sheet, so a page with less white border gets a bigger scale.
In our October 2026 run, a 12-page Letter document with 1 inch margins printed at 62 percent, its 11 point text at 6.8 points and the area inside its margins 4.0 inches wide. Once Crop PDF had taken 0.75 inch off every side, the same booklet printed at 75 percent: text at 8.3 points and that area 4.9 inches wide.
Leave some margin, though, because a stapled booklet hides a little at the fold and the printer can’t print to the edge. Crop less than the narrowest margin in the document, or you’ll lose page numbers and headers.
How many sheets a booklet needs
Every sheet carries four pages, two on each side, so divide the page count by four and round up. A 12-page file needs three sheets; a 30-page file needs eight, with two blank pages at the back.
Blank pages always go at the end, after your back cover, and that pushes the back cover inside. We made a booklet from a 10-page file whose last page is a back cover, and the back cover printed as page 10 of 12, inside the booklet, with the outside back left blank.
The fix is to put the two blanks in front of the back cover yourself. With Add Pages to PDF, insert 2 blank pages after page 9, then make the booklet: in our run the front and back covers then shared the outside of the first sheet, and the blanks became pages 10 and 11, just before the back cover.
In a thick booklet the inner sheets stick out a little at the open edge after folding. Trim that edge with a paper cutter if it bothers you, or split a long document into two thinner booklets.
Sending the booklet to a print shop
The booklet file is already imposed: each page is one side of a landscape Letter or A4 sheet with two of your pages on it, in folding order. Ask the shop first whether that’s what they want, or whether they’d rather have your original single pages and impose the job on their own press sheet.
We checked our output with Poppler’s pdfinfo and pdffonts. The media, crop, bleed and trim boxes are all the sheet size, so there’s no bleed area and no crop marks in the file.
Fonts come through the way your PDF has them. A LibreOffice export with an embedded font kept it embedded in the booklet, while a file that used Helvetica without embedding it still didn’t embed it, so if the shop requires embedded fonts, embed them when you export the source document.
What happened when we tested PDF Booklet
We uploaded sample-screenshots.pdf, a 12-page test file of 3.1 MB, and chose Letter paper. The tool returned sample-screenshots_Booklet.pdf, 3.1 MB with 6 sheet sides, 0.1 seconds after we pressed the button on our local test server.
Tested in October 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions about Making a PDF Booklet
How many pages can a booklet have?
Any number. Thick booklets are harder to fold and staple, though, so if the stack gets too thick, split the document into parts with Split PDF.
Why does my booklet have blank pages?
Every sheet holds four pages, so blank pages fill up the end when your page count isn’t a multiple of four.
Do I need special software to print it?
No. Any PDF reader can print the file. Just choose double-sided printing that flips on the short edge.
Is my file kept?
No. The upload and the booklet are deleted from our server within two hours.
