PDF to BMP: what the bitmap files contain and a tested example

Some older Windows programs, embedded systems and print workflows accept bitmap images only, so a PDF has to become BMP files first. Converting PDF to BMP renders each page as a picture made of pixels.

Our PDF to BMP converter renders every page you choose with Ghostscript at 150 dpi and saves it as an uncompressed 24-bit BMP. You get one BMP per page, packed in a single ZIP file.

Our guide shows how to convert only certain pages of a PDF to BMP, and how the ZIP with one BMP file per page is organised.

What the BMP files contain

The server uses Ghostscript's BMP output, one of the BMP devices described in the Ghostscript documentation. Every page is rendered with these settings:

  • Colour: 24-bit RGB, about 16.7 million colours, with no transparency. Read more in PDF to BMP colour depth.
  • Resolution: 150 dpi, so a US Letter page becomes 1275 by 1650 pixels.
  • Smoothing: text and graphics are anti-aliased at the level the Ghostscript documentation recommends for the best output, which is why text in the BMP looks smooth.
  • Compression: none; each pixel is stored as it is.

A BMP is a flat picture, so its text cannot be selected, links stop working and form fields become part of the image. For editable text, use PDF to Word instead.

Why BMP files are so large

An uncompressed 24-bit BMP needs three bytes for every pixel. A page of 1042 by 1042 pixels, which is what a 500-point square page gives at 150 dpi, is therefore about 3.1 MB as a BMP.

The ZIP file is compressed, so mostly white pages download much smaller than they unpack. Our guide on why BMP files are so large after PDF conversion has the details.

What happened when we tested PDF to BMP

We converted our small test file test3.pdf (2.0 KB, 5 pages, one short line of text on each) with Convert All Pages, the default. The download was a ZIP file of 48.7 KB with one BMP per page. Tested in October 2026.

BMP, PNG or TIFF: which image format to pick

Pick BMP only when the program you feed the images to needs it. PDF to PNG keeps the same pixels with lossless compression, so the files are far smaller, and PDF to TIFF suits print and archive workflows.

To go the other way and put bitmap images into a PDF, use BMP to PDF.
