PDF to TIFF: Resolution, Compression and Our Test

TIFF is still the image format many archives, scanning workflows and print shops ask for. Our PDF to TIFF converter renders each page of your PDF as a high-resolution TIFF image, so you can hand the pages to software that does not accept PDF.

The settings are fixed and stated up front: 300 DPI, 24-bit RGB color and lossless LZW compression, one TIFF file per page, all delivered in a ZIP. There is no sign-up and no watermark.

Our guide on extracting just some PDF pages as TIFF images walks through the page selection step in detail.

What TIFF files do you get?

Our server renders the pages with Ghostscript's tiffscaled24 device, which produces 24-bit RGB images, and saves them with LZW compression. Text and line art are smoothed (anti-aliased) as they are drawn.

300 DPI resolution

Every page is rendered at 300 DPI, so a letter-size page becomes an image of 2550 by 3300 pixels. There is no setting for a lower or higher resolution. Whether that is enough for your archive is covered in our guide Is 300 DPI TIFF good enough for archiving documents?

24-bit color

All pages come out in RGB color, even black-and-white documents. There is no CMYK, grayscale or one-bit fax output; read more in PDF to TIFF 24-bit color depth.

Lossless LZW compression

LZW makes the files smaller without dropping any pixel detail, so every TIFF opens exactly as rendered. Our guide Does PDF to TIFF use lossless compression? explains the trade-off.

One TIFF per page, in a ZIP

Each page becomes its own file, named Page-1.tif, Page-2.tif and so on, and the files are packed into one ZIP. The tool does not create a single multi-page TIFF; why PDF to TIFF gives separate files covers the reasons and the workarounds.

What happened when we tested PDF to TIFF

We converted our small test file test3.pdf (2.0 KB, 5 pages) with Convert All Pages, the default. The download, test3_PDFToTIFF.zip, was 156.7 KB and held one TIFF image for each of the 5 pages. Tested in October 2026.

The jump from 2.0 KB to 156.7 KB is normal: the PDF stores text as compact instructions, while each TIFF stores every pixel of a 300 DPI page.

What is TIFF, and when is it better than PDF, PNG or JPEG?

TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) is, in the words of the Library of Congress format description, a tag-based format for storing and interchanging raster images. It supports lossless compression such as LZW and can hold several pages in one file.

Choose TIFF when an archive, a document management system or a print workflow asks for it. For web pages and email, PDF to PNG usually gives smaller lossless images, and PDF to JPG gives the smallest files for photos.

Tips for the best PDF to TIFF results

The output can only be as sharp as the PDF. A scan saved at a low resolution stays blurry at 300 DPI, so start from the best copy you have.

Pick only the pages you need, because every 300 DPI color page adds hundreds of kilobytes or more once unzipped. To convert several PDFs in one run, join them first with Merge PDF.

Frequently Asked Questions about PDF to TIFF

What resolution are the TIFF images?

300 DPI for every page. There is no option to change it.

Can I get one multi-page TIFF instead of separate files?

No. The tool saves one TIFF per page and packs them into a ZIP file.

Is the TIFF compression lossless?

Yes. The images use LZW compression, which keeps every pixel as rendered.

Can I convert only some pages?

Yes. Choose Convert Selected Pages, click the pages you want and start the conversion.

Can I convert several PDFs at once?

No. The tool takes one PDF at a time, so merge several PDFs first if you want them in one run.

Do I need to create an account?

No. Upload, convert and download without signing up; the files are deleted from our server automatically within two hours.
