Everything You Need to Know About Extract Images
PDF files often contain photographs, scans, screenshots, and other raster images that you may want to reuse. Extract Images from PDF makes that job simple by pulling embedded raster images into a ZIP archive.
Extract Images from PDF FreeHow to extract images from a PDF
Upload one PDF, choose Extract Images, and download the ZIP when processing finishes. If your source document is large, use our PDF splitter first to isolate the pages containing the images you need. The browser sends the document to the self-hosted converter, which inspects the PDF image objects and creates a separate file for each embedded raster image.
What gets extracted
The tool extracts embedded raster images such as JPEG, PNG, TIFF, JPEG 2000, and other image streams supported by the PDF utilities installed on the server. It does not render each page as a screenshot. A page background, vector logo, line drawing, or text remains part of the PDF and is not turned into a separate image.
Native quality and formats
Images are saved in the native format where the PDF contains one. This avoids unnecessary re-encoding and helps preserve the source resolution and color information. The ZIP uses stable image names so you can identify and sort the results easily.
Because extraction works on the original embedded object, the result can differ from what you see on the page. A PDF may scale, crop, mask, or combine an image with other content. The extracted file is the underlying image, not always a complete visual copy of the page.
Privacy and limitations
Uploads and generated ZIP files are temporary and are removed by the application cleanup process. Password-protected PDFs should be unlocked before extraction. The tool does not crack passwords, perform OCR, reconstruct vector artwork, or identify images that exist only as pixels in a full-page scan.
If you need a picture of every complete page, use a PDF-to-JPG or PDF-to-PNG converter instead. If you're checking whether two versions of a document differ, use our PDF comparison tool instead. If you need editable text, use an extraction or OCR tool. Extract Images is focused on the original embedded raster assets.
Frequently Asked Questions About Extracting Images from PDF
Does the tool extract every picture?
It extracts embedded raster image objects that the PDF exposes. Vector artwork and page screenshots are outside this tool's scope.
Will the images keep their original format?
Where the embedded stream has a supported native format, the ZIP preserves that format instead of rendering the page again.
Can I extract images from a password-protected PDF?
Unlock the PDF first with an authorized password. The extractor does not bypass document security.
Why is an image different from its appearance in the PDF?
PDF layout instructions can scale, crop, mask, or layer an image. Extraction returns the underlying asset rather than a screenshot of its final placement.
