Does zipping make a PDF smaller?

A little. ZIP is an archive format with lossless compression, and this tool uses DEFLATE, its most common method. Lossless means every byte of every PDF comes back unchanged when you unzip it.

Most PDFs already store their text and images compressed, so a ZIP usually saves only a small share of their size. In our test a 2.0 KB PDF became a 1.7 KB archive.

If the goal is a much smaller file, shrink the PDF itself with Compress PDF, which can reduce image quality to save space. Zip the compressed files afterwards if you still want one package.

Why bundle PDFs in a ZIP file

A ZIP keeps related documents together: one attachment instead of ten, or one upload for a form that accepts a single file. The recipient gets every PDF with its original name.

If the recipient should get one document rather than several files, combine them with Merge PDF instead. Split PDF already delivers its parts as a ZIP, so you do not need this tool after splitting a PDF.

What happened when we tested PDF to ZIP

We added our small test file test3.pdf (2.0 KB, 5 pages) and clicked Create ZIP, with no other options to choose. The browser saved PDFTools.zip, which was 1.7 KB. Tested in October 2026.

How to open the ZIP file

Windows, macOS, Android and iOS can all open ZIP files without extra software. On Windows, right-click the archive and choose Extract All, as Microsoft's guide to zipping and unzipping files shows.

On a Mac, double-click the ZIP to unpack it. On a phone, open it in the Files app or your file manager.

File names and password-protected PDFs

Every PDF keeps its file name inside the archive. If two files have the same name, the second one gets _2 added before the extension so neither is overwritten.

The ZIP itself has no password. To protect the contents, add a password to each PDF with Protect PDF before zipping.

A PDF that needs a password to open is refused; remove the password with Unlock PDF first if you are allowed to. PDFs that only restrict printing or copying can be zipped as they are.

Limits and privacy

Each PDF can be up to 25 MB. Because the archive is built in your browser, your files are not uploaded and nothing is stored on our server.

Are my PDFs uploaded?

Why is my ZIP file not much smaller than my PDFs?

PDF content is usually compressed already, so ZIP compression saves little. Compress the PDFs first if you need smaller files.

Can I zip a password-protected PDF?

Only if it opens without a password. A PDF that needs a password to open must be unlocked first.

Will the PDFs change when I unzip them?

No. ZIP compression is lossless, so each PDF is exactly the same file after unzipping.
