PDF to PNG: Resolution, File Size and Common Problems

PNG is the right format when you need a PDF page as an image for a slide, a document or a web page, because it stores the pixels without lossy compression. This converter renders every page you choose as a 300 DPI PNG on our server and gives you all the images in one ZIP file. It adds no watermark, and you do not need an account.

The ZIP holds one file per page, named Page-1.png, Page-2.png and so on. The converter takes one PDF per run, up to 25 MB.

What resolution and color the PNG files have

Every page is rendered at a fixed 300 DPI, so an A4 page becomes an image of about 2480 by 3508 pixels. There is no resolution setting, as our guide to PDF to PNG resolution explains, and enlarging the image later adds no detail. Text and line edges are smoothed with anti-aliasing, which keeps small type readable, as covered in our guide to PDF to PNG for crisp text.

The pages are rendered with Ghostscript's png16m device, which the Ghostscript documentation describes as 24-bit RGB color. That mode has no alpha channel, so the background comes out white and not transparent; our guide to PDF to PNG with a transparent background covers the workarounds.

Why PDF to PNG files are large

A PDF page often stores text and drawings as vectors, which take little space. A PNG stores every pixel, and at 300 DPI a page holds millions of them, so the images can add up to more than the PDF. Our article on why PDF to PNG files are so large goes into the reasons.

PNG uses lossless compression, so nothing is thrown away to save space. If size matters more than perfect edges, our PDF to JPG converter makes smaller files with some loss.

PNG or JPG: which format to choose for PDF pages

Choose PNG for pages with text, tables, diagrams and screenshots, where sharp edges matter. Choose JPG for pages that are mostly photos, where small compression artifacts do not show. For print workflows that ask for TIFF, use our PDF to TIFF converter.

When the PDF to PNG conversion fails

If a page fails to render, the job may stop or the ZIP may miss pages, so count the images after downloading. Our troubleshooting guide for PDF to PNG not working lists the usual causes. A damaged file can often be fixed first with our Repair PDF tool.

What happened when we tested PDF to PNG

We converted sample-screenshots.pdf, a 12-page PDF of screenshots of our own app, 3.1 MB in size, with Convert all pages (the default). The download, sample-screenshots_PDFToPNG.zip, came to 2.6 MB with one PNG per page.

The pages of this sample are screenshots stored as lossless images, so a PDF of plain text can give a very different ratio. Tested in October 2026 on a local copy of our server.
